Quiksilver Foundation & Skeleton Sea join forces

As a non-profit organization working to provide environmental, educational, health and youth-related projects to boardriding communities around the world, the Quiksilver Foundation is our perfect partner for a new creative project that underlines just a few of the terrible consequences of plastic pollutants in our oceans.

Inspired by the tragic story and images of Albatross chicks on Midway Island dying slow and agonizing deaths due to ingested plastics consumed in error by the seabirds, we (Xandi Kreuzeder and Joao Parrinha), created a new artwork and a short film titled the ‘Albatross Exhibitionist’.

Constructed using a selection of plastics recovered during a beach cleaning exercise, the Albatross Exhibitionist represents a stark reminder to us all about the importance of cleaning up our collective act.

Ian Hinkle, the cameraman and producer of Midway journey, who provided us with some of the images in the film, brings our feelings with this project to the point.
“Midway Islands stands as a reminder to all of us, about the choices we make and our ability to see ourselves as a part of an interconnected whole. The Albatross is a mirror for us to look into and really see ourselves.”

The installation and film are intended to inspire people to think about what they can do to minimize that impact. Ultimately, we always strive to create work that inspires changes in behavior, and this piece is no different in that sense.”

We just had the unveiling ceremony at the International Ouiksilver Sales Meeting and now the Albatross Exhibitionist installation and film will be on public display at a number of surf contests, exhibitions and events this year, starting at the world-famous Roxy Pro in Biarritz, France mid July 2011.

To help spread the word and raise awareness further and wider, we designed men’s and women’s Albatross Exhibitionist tees (fair trade/organic cotton), in either black or white.
