Thanks to All of You in Itajai …
…. for making the Itajai beach clean such a success! We had over 200 people over the 5 different sites, and have collected a mountain of rubbish that João is very excited about turning into a sculpture. He is making quite a thought-provoking installation this time… certainly not one of beauty… featuring a local species of fish called the Tainha, which has been mutated by pollution in the river, and is dragging a trawl net of rubbish along behind him. It will definitely make people think!

Auckland’s Whale Tail story
In Auckland, this stunning Whale’s Tail is the result of a wonderful week of activity led by joined forces of Jacquline Smith of the Volvo Ocean Race management and Skeleton Sea artist Joao Parrinha at the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover recently. It all began by the Team New Zealand base, where artist João Parrinha created the base of a new art piece yet to be created from old pieces of metal. Then, a beach clean was held on Motuihe Island with the knowledge and help of the charming Ranger, John Mills. Around 40 people from all over the world joined the clean-up effort, ranging in age from 2.5 years to the mid sixties!
Lighters, bottle tops and small pieces of plastic of all colours and descriptions were collected, then sorted and cleaned for the Art Workshops. Children from all over Auckland have helped to decorate it – making individual mosaics with the rubbish that João has attached to the base to create a colourful, unique sculpture. Here it will stay at the Voyager Museum, where the Art Workshops were kindly hosted. It serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping the oceans clean!
In each of the ten Volvo Ocean Race Stopovers, a community beach clean is organised to contribute to ‘keeping the oceans clean’ in the local context, and a series of art workshops are held to transform the rubbish collected into a unique sculpture; a creative example of turning ‘trash into treasure’ with the help of the Skeleton Sea artists.
Beach Clean Up in Auckland

Skeleton Sea is at the Volvo Ocean Race in Auckland, New Zealand, from the 10th to the 17th of March 2012:
On Saturday, there is a Beach Clean on Motuihe Island that everyone is welcome to. A free ferry will depart Pier 4 at 10am, which has been generously donated by the Ports of Auckland. Please meet outside the Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum for registration. The ferry has a limited capacity, so please arrive earlier to avoid disappointment! Bags and gloves will be provided. Participants are asked to bring their own water and snacks, and to wear a hat and sturdy shoes for the beach clean. Children under 18 years must be supervised by an adult. The ferry will return at 1pm, complete with all the collected rubbish that will become the important ingredients in our next Project… the Environmental Art Workshops!
The Environmental Art Workshops begin on Sunday the 11th of March and continue on Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th of March. Hours are between 10am – 12pm and 1pm – 4pm in a classroom kindly provided by the Voyager Museum. Here, Skeleton Sea artist João Parrinha will create a unique sculpture with the rubbish collected from the beach clean… with the help of the workshop participants.
Workshop in Sanya finished
Our workshop during the stop over of the Volvo Ocean Race in Sanya, China just finished and we proudly present the PRESENTS OF THE SEA installation, which will remain in Sailing school of the Serenity Marina in Sanya.
Puma skipper Ken Read said, “It’s an incredible place to sail, the sad part is how much stuff is in the water, how much junk there is in the water. How people in the world can’t treat the ocean with more respect is just fully beyond me”.

Oceans are so important to all living creatures including us humans. Every second breath we take is oxygen produced by our oceans and the carbon dioxide is absorbed by them too. Without our oceans life on earth would not exist!!I We hope our Skeleton Sea awareness project “KEEP THE OCEANS CLEAN” together with the popularity of the Volvo Ocean Race sailing around the world will help to make society aware of the degradation of such a vital part of our ecosystem!!
An ocean load of problems
A constant stream of debris including a piece of trash the size of a small car has shocked the Volvo Ocean Race sailors as they weave around the potentially boat breaking obstacles in the Malacca Strait.

Beachcleaning in Sanya, China
Local students motivated to strengthen Sanya’s tourism stronghold turned out in force at the Keep the Oceans Clean! beach clean at Luhuitou Village Beach on Saturday.

The university students joined more than 100 locals, race supporters and the CEO Knut Frostad and made light work of the rubbish including plastic bags, cigarette butts and burger boxes.
It is the fourth beach clean organised by environmental campaigners Skeleton Sea and the Volvo Ocean Race through their combined Keep the Oceans Clean! project.
Skeleton Sea artist João Parrinha, who again led the clean-up, said the local enthusiasm for protecting the environment was similar to that shown at previous stopovers Alicante, Cape Town and Abu Dhabi.
