Puma skipper Ken Read said, “It’s an incredible place to sail, the sad part is how much stuff is in the water, how much junk there is in the water. How people in the world can’t treat the ocean with more respect is just fully beyond me”.

Oceans are so important to all living creatures including us humans. Every second breath we take is oxygen produced by our oceans and the carbon dioxide is absorbed by them too. Without our oceans life on earth would not exist!!I  We hope our Skeleton Sea awareness project  “KEEP THE OCEANS CLEAN” together with the popularity of the Volvo Ocean Race sailing around the world will help to make society aware of the degradation of such a vital part of our ecosystem!!

The university students joined more than 100 locals, race supporters and the CEO Knut Frostad and made light work of the rubbish including plastic bags, cigarette butts and burger boxes.

It is the fourth beach clean organised by environmental campaigners Skeleton Sea and the Volvo Ocean Race through their combined Keep the Oceans Clean! project.

Skeleton Sea artist João Parrinha, who again led the clean-up, said the local enthusiasm for protecting the environment was similar to that shown at previous stopovers Alicante, Cape Town and Abu Dhabi.

A selection of key Skeleton Sea works of art will be on display during the trade show in Munich, including the Roxy Mermaid supported, Msambweni Ark and the Abyss. In addition, the exhibition at ISPO MUNICH will also welcome works from acclaimed artist Fran Crowe, our recently added guest artist from the United Kingdom.

Looking beyond ISPO MUNICH, this year will also see our continued involvement in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12, which kicked off in the Spanish port of Alicante in October 2011 and which will culminate in Galway, Ireland some 39,000 nautical miles later in July 2012.

The Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) will set the scene for Skeleton Sea to exhibit a selection of art pieces highlighting the ‘Keep our Oceans Clean’ campaign.

The traveling exhibition, erected in the Volvo Ocean Race Village, is supported by beach cleaning initiatives as well as educational workshops aimed at providing the general public and school children in particular with an opportunity to create a new installation in every stopover port. Together with the help of volunteers, Skeleton Sea has already created three striking works of art, namely Saludos del Mare in Alicante, Future Sea Aquarium in Cape Town and most recently the Lulu Fish in Abu Dhabi.

The next VOR stop is Sanya, the southernmost city in the People’s Republic of China. From there, VOR and Skeleton Sea will continue on to Auckland, Itajai, Miami, Lisbon, Lorient, and finally Galway.

And until the week after Easter, visitors to the Basque Country will have an opportunity to check out the main Skeleton Sea exhibition in the Basque Biodiversity Center at Torre Madariaga. The final week of the exhibition will also see a beach cleaning workshop taking place in nearby Mundaka, as well as the creation of an creative installation that will remain on display at the Basque Biodiversity Center.

In order to continue spreading our message based around the importance of keeping our oceans clean, a prime exhibition space was always going to be key. And we’re delighted that Jacqui Smith and Joao Parrinha managed to find such a perfect location to display the fish.  The location in question is the National Shipping Company (NGSCO), whose mission is to carry out the safe, efficient and environmentally responsive transportation of sea cargo.  Ali Al-Yabhouni, Chief Executive Officer, took a personal interest in the Skeleton Sea Project, as well as the Keep the Oceans Clean program at the Volvo Ocean Race. The CEO kindly offered a fantastic display space in the NGSCO main entrance hallway, where it will now be exhibited behind a specially made glass vitrine.  Special thanks to NGSCO, and all the children and volunteers who helped to create the Lulu Fish, as well as all those who took part in the beach cleaning session on Lulu Island.

An 80-strong group of children and adults from Abu Dhabi and the Volvo Ocean Race family took part in the beach clean on Lulu Island last Saturday, collecting the raw materials that will become part of a sculpture during the workshops João is running since last Sunday.

The name giving to the marine debris fish is Lulu fitting perfectly referring to the clean up location and on top in Arab language “Lulu” means pearl.

Adventurous beach cleaners (those over the age of 18) can kayak over to Lulu Island, while everyone else will be shuttled over to the island in a boat.

Registration will be between 0900 and 0930 local time at the main entrance to the Destination Village and boats will leave from the main pontoon shortly afterwards.

Rubbish bags and gloves will be provided, and water will be available, but everyone is asked to bring their own water bottle.

The waste materials found on the beach will then be used for the Skeleton Sea sculpture which will be created at the Keep the Oceans Clean! art workshops during the Abu Dhabi stopover.

These will be held on the beach outside the Keep the Oceans Clean! dome under the Etihad tent between January 8 and January 14.

In addition to the beach clean, João will be giving a talk about his work with artist collective Skeleton Sea in the dome at 2000 local time on Monday, January 9.

The artists from Skeleton Sea have been working with local youngsters to create a piece of art made from junk collected from a beach clean at Mouille Point, part of the Volvo Ocean Race’s campaign to Keep the Oceans Clean!

And now a piece of rope and netting snared by PUMA’s keel in the South Atlantic has been added to the sculpture, which will go on display in Cape Town’s Aquarium.

The sculpture is an underwater scene featuring turtles, penguins, crabs and lobsters all made from rubbish.

The sculpture will be on show at the Two Oceans Aquarium in their section dedicated to plastics found in the oceans.
